英语名词具有数的语法特征，它通过本身的词形变化来表示单复数，汉语名词却没有这一特征。汉语的名词没有词形变化，它本身表示不出单复数的明确概念，如果名词前后不加上表示单复数的词，有时就难以判断它所指的是单数还是复数。

　　例A：请代向令史致候。

　　英译：

　　（1）Pleasesendmybestregardstoyourelderbrother.

　　（2）Pleaseremembermetoyourelderbrother.

　　（3）Givemykindremembrancetoyourelderbrother.

　　（4）Pleasegivemycomplimentstoyourelderbrother.

　　（5）Kindlysendmybestwishestoyourelderbrother.

　　选择中（3）是唯一错误的翻译，英译中问候可用动词send、give、make、pay、present等，名词用regards，wishes，remembrances，compliments，respects等，但这些字均为复数形式，所以（3）中的remembrance应改为remembrances.

　　例B：江西有多少人口？

　　英译：

　　（1）HowmanypeoplesarethereinJiangxi？

　　（2）WhatisthepopulationofJiangxi？

　　（3）HowmanypopulationhasJiangxi？

　　（4）WhatisthenumberofJiangxi'spopulations？

　　选择（1），（3），（4）均错，在（1）中people作“民族”解释时才有单复数之分，故peoples应改为people；（3），（4）中population“一个地区人口之总数”，不能加“s”，也不能用many修饰。

　　例C：我每天抽一包烟。

　　英译：

　　（1）Ismokeonepackofcigarettesaday.

　　（2）Ismoketwentypiecesofcigarettesaday.

　　（3）Ismoketwentycigarettesaday.
